RE: V10 misfiring - questions

Will, if you are serious about a scanner I would also consider investing in the Helm manuals also as these provide you with the trouble trees for chasing down each code the PCM is capable of producing.

RE: V10 misfiring - questions

Will glad you got it fixed!!! Here we are talking about complex everything is and it's nothing more than a chafed wire! Good news is the truck is back and no trip to the dealer!!!! Don

RE: V10 misfiring - questions

My work 2005 3V 5.4L Expedition recently did the same thing. Only when under light load, and only when in 4th (OD) with the tq converter locked up. The tech hooked up a scanner and went for a ride w/me. Cyl #1 misfire. It only flashed the check engine light when I got it to misfire under heavy load (floored it). When under light load, the misfire made it buck really bad, but even then didn't set a code. So what was determined to be the cause????

RE: Finally Got New (To Us) Tow Vehicle!!

Hey Cardiac, nice looking truck! Good luck and many happy towing miles! It wasn't long ago that V-10s were a dime-a-dozen because everybody wanted the PSD in the X, but with the price of diesel fuel I would probably pick the V10 if I was buying one today. But only because GM stopped putting the 8.1 in the Suburbans....:)

RE: Let My Neighbor Borrow/Rent My TT?

Not just a question of trust, or fixing anything that breaks, but has he ever towed before? I would be more concerned with him wrecking the thing out of lack of experience towing than simply breaking something.

RE: Tires on HOT pavement

Sorry Barney.....I see Cujo1950 hasn't posted back, I hope he's not out buying a digital temp gauge and a pair of calipers. :):):):):):):):) Also hope nobody is offended by a little humor....The question was already answered correctly: Inflate to the right psi when cold and leave it there.

RE: V10 misfiring - questions

Fuel injectors are $71 each at Rock Auto. I would agree that the coil pack is a more likely culprit than the injector. This is what sets the good dealers and shops apart from the mediocre ones....expertise in repair today is all about the diagnosis, less about the actual mechanical work. For the most part, changing the part is not that difficult, it's figuring out what's broken that's the hard part.

RE: Tires on HOT pavement

Correct Ben and thanks for the clarification! The formula posted above is for GREEN valve caps. If yours are black, use a variance factor of 0.868, NOT 1.0. If running regular pump air instead of Nitrogen, your sidewall variance allowance is effectively reduced from 3.5% to 2.72%. Be sure your measurements are dead-on accurate, because running below max psi and making an error in this formula will almost certainly cause a blow out. NOTE: If any tire cools off by more 3 deg F while you are making these adjustments, it will be need to be re-calculated and the pressure re-adjusted before driving. One last note, please be careful when using the infrared thermometer, it can harmful to any squirrels in a 100' radius of the measuring area.

RE: V10 misfiring - questions

The only answer we'll have is whether or not the coil pack was bad, but keep us updated in any event! Hopefully that will solve your problem!

RE: V10 misfiring - questions

Thanks, rlh, I stand corrected. Will, Ben's post underscores my point....there's a lot more to diagnostics than simply reading the code. The code only indicates the condition that the PCM observes, it doesn't tell you what's causing it. O2 sensors can be tested by comparing voltage/resistance to stated values, as can coil packs, etc. Determining continuity is not enough, input/output voltage must be within the correct range, sometimes only .2 or .3 volts for the PCM to process the output successfully. If you are going the DIY route, you most definitely need the Helm factory service manuals that have the diagnostic trouble trees for every PCM code. Helm has the 2003 Powertrain Control And Emission Diagnosis Manual-Gas Only for only $120. It's only 3,000 pages, probably won't take long to track this problem down.... Don

RE: V10 misfiring - questions

Well, I have to say it might be time for the dealer.... Fortunately, I have a good independent mechanic that does all my work. Not cheap by any means but less expensive than the dealer. Unfortunately, it's not the wrenching that's the hard part, but the diagnostics. I would suspect that "lean condition" would indicate a mis-firing injector more than it would a bad coil pack. If the garage changes out the wrong part they will warranty the repair and it's on their nickel. It's not hard to exceed the cost of a professional repair these days just be hit-and-miss with parts changing. I may be wrong, but I don't think the PCM can vary fuel quantity by cylinder. Good luck and post back after you change the coil pack.

RE: Tires on HOT pavement

Always start out by airing the tires up to the max psi when cold (prior to 7am). Note the ambient temperature at the time when you check the tires. Temperture then changes at 4 critical times each day, 10am, noon, 2pm and 4 pm. Best way to handle this is to take a break as close as possible to these critical times and assess your tire situation. Using a digital tire gauge, record the current psi for each tire. Using your infrared thermometer, record the temp of each tire in degrees F. Using a pair of calipers, measure the section width of each tire at the widest point along the sidewall. Compare the measured sidewall width to the spec width provided by the tire manufacturer, and if increased by more than 3.5%, then possible pressure adjustment is warranted. Calculate both the temp rise at the tire and also the psi increase from the baselines noted when cool. If the square root of the sum of the differences exceeds the section width variance by more than a factor of 1.0, then adjust the pressure on a per-tire basis in increments of 0.5 psi until an acceptable ratio is obtained. Or, just leave them at 80, they will be fine.

RE: 2008 Terry 280FQS-Finally Some Photos

Nice job. I noticed a few tools of the trade sitting on the counter so I have to ask... How many beers would you rate the work? I lost count....LOL... Need to post some updates, we switched the position of the table/chairs and the sofa. When the sofa bed was open it just touched the end of the kitchen cabinet at the dogleg, and you couldn't walk around it. Now with it in the rear position, you can easily walk around it to the bath, still access the fridge etc.

RE: New Spark Plugs for the GM 8.1l

The 8.1 comes from the factory with platinum plugs. Mine lasted 75K miles and I changed then with OEM Delco platinum. No point to using copper that I can see. th eabove post is correct, gas mileage and performance will be the same if the plugs are clean. Copper plugs are half the price of platinum, but you change them twice as often so what's the point?

RE: Help choosing a hitch weight range

Agree, buy the trailer, load it up and get it weighed. Then you;ll have the info to make a good decision with ni substantial risk in the meantime. I think you would be hard pressed to get that TW to 1200 lbs.

RE: V10 misfiring - questions

and its *not* tripping any codes Have you validated this with a scan tool? Depending on the code, it may be set and stored without illuminating the "check engine" light. Just because the light hasn't come on does NOT mean you haven't set any codes. Some codes are stored for x number of drive cycles and are erased if the condition doesn't re-occur within that time, and conversely may be programmed to set the light if the code re-occurs x times within x drive cycles. As I said before, I'm very hesitant to mess with the plugs until absolutely necessary, for fear of the blow out issue. Also agree on the plugs, the platinum plugs in our Suburban were rated at 100K miles, but they were toast after 75K miles. Ignoring the problem doesn't make it go away..... My last comment is that you need to drive that truck more....sitting is a killer for any vehicle, and just using it for errands doesn't get the engine hot enough for long enough, and invites combustion deposits. Take it for a highway run instead of the minivan next time, keep it exercised. And bring your credit card for the gas stations....

RE: Question about smartphones

Agree, the Blackberry hands down for email, but iPhone is the best for browsing because of the screen size if nothing else. I have Opera Mini on my Blackberry 8830 and it's OK, but I wouldn't want to have to rely on it. Another option, although you don't mention it, is an ultra-light laptop or "palmtop" computer that DW could carry in her purse or bag. That with the aircard would make better work of the forums. Reading the forums during office hours is one thing, but if she has to post responses then she's goping to miss the keyboard.
